Wife, Chicken Mommy, eBay Seller and Walking DIY Disaster

I’ve had a stack of quilt tops to be sandwiched and quilted for a good while now. Recently I found out about a local drop-in art studio that has great rates AND A QUILTING MACHINE!!

With prices starting in the thousands, a quilting machine of my own is completely out of the question. Trying to quilt on my machine left me frustrated and angry, so finding a rentable machine is the bee’s knees!

I will have lots to show once I get them all bound, so lots of pictures coming soon-ish.

Later this month I will get to see all my best internet quilty friends at a retreat called The Stash Bash. Lots of photos coming from that too!

Trying to navigate winters in Michigan is still crippling and having something to look forward to is the only thing that gets me through. April is not winter you say? Tell that to the 5+ inches of snow we got yesterday. I’m still reeling.

Luckily I have some fun stuff on my calendar to get me out of bed. Fingers crossed for no more April snow.

I just renewed my hosting and domain name. And then I realized that I’ve practically stopped blogging. Now that instagram, my go-to social outlet of choice seems to be getting fucked, I do believe I’m going to have to dust this space off.

Since I last updated I’ve really delved into quilting even more, participated in some really fun sewing swaps and made lots of new friends through sewing and quilting.

Home life is…..well, teenager-y. We have 2 new drivers (one still only on a permit) a million places they want to be and I rarely have to be the mom taxi. It’s cliched to say how much you miss all the running around. I’d totally say it but I’d be lying. It’s REALLY nice to start a project or what have you and be able to finish. Call me crazy but I LIKE the teenage years. It’s pretty cool to see these almost-adults that inhabit our house. Well, when they come out of their rooms.

The millionaire is going full swing with the Choke Chains. The record is out, the video is awesome and we’re trying to figure out touring.

Also since last updating my grandmother died. I’m still very affected, more than I expected to be. It’s been a little over a year now.

We still have a herd of cats. 8 that belong to us and one that desperately wants to join the pack. He’s adorable but we are absolutely at our limit.

So. That’s it in a nutshell. Hopefully I’ll get back into the swing of things here. Oh, and FUCK YOU instagram for going the way of FB.

I like to read and I like to sew. Some of my favorite books are sewing books, especially vintage ones. So when I saw that Amy Barickman used themes from one of her favorite sewing influences, Mary Brooks Picken,  in her new book The Magic Pattern Book, I was intrigued.

Part of the reason I love old sewing books is the wealth of knowledge they contain. For some, flipping through an old book is torture. For me it’s another piece of history to absorb and identify with. The Magic Pattern Book takes the enthusiasm of my favorite vintage sewing books and combines modern looks and updated tools.

Hunting for patterns that extend to my size (BIG) that also flatter my shape (lots of curves, some in the wrong places) is often so frustrating that I end up trying to make my own pattern. While I have access to the tools to draft my own patterns, I’m also impatient. Sometimes a girl just wants to find a pattern that doesn’t require much tweaking. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that Amy Barickman’s latest offering includes measurements up to XXL. Be still my heart!

While my love for all things vintage is vast, it always nice to have my modern conveniences. I love the CD included with the book for printing pattern pieces. What’s especially great is that I can isolate the size I need without having to ruin pattern pieces of other sizes. This is definitely an improvement over the tissue patterns of the past. It’s much harder for me to destroy a printed page than tissue paper, that’s for sure.

Here’s the part where I admit defeat: I didn’t sew anything from the book yet. A long scheduled vacation took me out of town in the days between receiving my copy of the book and a post-vacation case of the creeping crud has knocked me flat. However, I have read and enjoyed the upbeat and encouraging tone throughout the book.

I absolutely love the fabric swatch ideas posted for each pattern! Sometimes having an extra idea or two can bring me out of a rut. A fabric I may never have considered (a thrifted wool blanket as material for a coat!) took my imagination places it could not have gone on its own. Thrifting is one of my biggest hobbies, so seeing suggestions for upcycling fabric won me over completely.

I really think The Magic Pattern Book is a must have. Each time I go back to a section, I find something I didn’t notice before. The language is easy to understand, the tips and tools explanations are a great refresher for even experienced sewists, and the patterns themselves are classic styles that are easily manipulated for individuality.

School is back in session and I realized that most of my “blogging” these days is on instagram.

I miss my blog sometimes. Something about the writing and trying to figure out what to say. Pictures are so much easier for me. Pictures don’t stretch my brain the way words do.

Happy back to school. Happy new start.

If my poor little blog was a cottage, the front porch would sag, the paint peel and the weeds would be waist high. It would be mournfully gazing over at me holding hands and skipping through the meadow with my new love. I feel guilty for neglecting my former friend, but there’s so much to be done to get things up to speed that I have no idea where to start.

I blame instagram. It’s so damn convenient. Instant gratification has ruined me for stopping to write, edit and format. Not that I enjoy the writing part or am any good a it. Pictures and I are BFFs. We just get each other better. So you’ll have to pardon us while we make out in the corner. We can’t seem to keep our paws off each other.

If you are feeling voyeuristic, come check out my love affair. Unless you are a cat hater, food hater or crafty/quilty hater, you’ll probably find it fun to watch. @wwwindylou on instagram.

Here’s a fluffy kitty to make things better.

I’m so jealous that I missed that photo op, but I was having fun at the merch table.

It’s been about a million years since I had anything as cool as this going on. In an awesome moment of boredom I discovered NOBUNNY was looking for a driver/road manager. Being the sometimes go-getter that I am, I immediately volunteered. How can you pass up a chance to go on tour with the best bunny in the business?

So here I am, stepmother extraordinaire, taking off from suburban hell for almost a month. And it’s phenomenal. And I miss everyone at home. And I feel like Windy for the first time in a long time.

It is, however, time for our annual trip to the Philadelphia area. This year we will be in a different area than before, one more suburban. I’m already missing my walks through center city and we haven’t even boarded the plane.

Still, it will be nice to escape MI and get away. It’s hard for me to describe what a change of scenery can do for my winter blahs. In a nutshell, it’s amazing. Knowing that I won’t run into anyone I know is such a liberating feeling for me. Every person is new, every place is new. Something about strange and new perks me right up and draws me in. I will have to rely on my wits and GPS to get around, I will be forced to pay attention. There’s no phoning it in when you are in a new place.

I sleepwalk my way through the winters enough as it is. So long, dreamland. Hello, Pennsylvania.

I’m finally using Flickr. Instagram has me sucked in to quilting swaps, and flickr groups for sewists and quilters. So now I am sucked in to making mosaics too. Here are a few of my favorites.
